In the “Decameron” novels by Boccaccio Dianora is a happily married woman, but she is being courted by Ansaldo. In an effort to get rid of him, she is prepared to make a bet and asks him to prove his love by completing an impossible task: A beautiful garden full of flowers in the middle of January! Ansaldo, with the help of a magician, completes the task and wins the bet. Dianora is mortified, but decides to keep her word. Ansaldo is so impressed by her honesty that he decides to release her from the bet.
